Pallet Vise
Take a new or used lockdown type vise, and modify as
follows: Using a .5000 ball end mill, groove the rigid and moving jaws as
shown in picture, make grooves .2495 deep. Make sure that both jaws are
dialed in right to the tenth. I put the groove right through the 1/2-13 holes.
Using
a layout of your liking, I used one on center, and one in 1/2" from
each end, drill and tap 8-32.
Using .5000 TGP, make two rails, and drill
and countersink them for 8-32 SHCS.
When making pallets, make matching grooves, Put a rather
healthy stop on the right side of the pallets that will hit the rigid jaw
of the vise. I put a drill bushing in one pallet of each set, and dial in
the bushing as a reference for the ensuing work.
When locking the pallets in the vise, use a torque wrench.
I usually use between 25 and 75 inch pounds. With all of the surface
contact this is a lot of holding power. Always use the same torque that
you used when making the fixture. The combination of the round member and
the sides will cause the pallet to repeat position each time you torque.
The round features are easier to keep clean than dovetails.
Now machine your particular fixture, D&T holes or
however you are going to hold this part in each pallet. When done you can
machine one set of parts while loading / unloading the other pallet. |
