Face Groove Tool
Don't you hate
making face groove tool's? I do. To make the proper side clearance is
sometimes a task. Make it easy on yourself. Use the shank of a broken
solid carbide end mill. See sketch below. I recently used a .250
shank, and plunged into 4340 .500 deep with no problems. The clearance is
built in. Grind the shank to the centerline, put a small amount of face
clearance on the tool, and it's ready to go, no matter what diameter you
are cutting.
